As Though they Had Never Been Mark Oliver The story of Pasquale, child of a little Italian town. His father is drowned and, unable to get food or work, he runs away to the big glittering city and is sucked into the world of vice and squalor. Nevertheless, this is not a depressing book, because its hero is not downtrodden but courageous and lively.
The book captures the essence of Italy: the ageing parish priest who finds it hard to serve God surrounded daily by starving children, the funeral of the village prostitute, "merely a local woman but she had loved a great deal", and Pasquale himself, in finding a sudden moment of inspiration when struggling to tell his young friend of his first sexual experience—"It was like lying on a moving mountain that smelt of flowers."
