Valparaiso Nicolas Freeling After sailing and bumming round the
Mediterranean for years, Raymond, a gifted drifter, has dropped anchor
for over a year in Porquerolles, a lazy island off the Cote d'Azur.
Natalie, a second-rank Parisian film star, comes to the island for
a break. Soon she falls in love; less with Raymond than his ambition to
cross the Atlantic single-handed in his beloved boat, the 'Olivia'.
But
the 'Olivia' needs refitting. Jo, Raymond's unscrupulous young protege,
comes up with a seemingly cast-iron plan to raise money. And Raymond,
blinded by obsession, unhinged by his affair with Natalie, falls in
with it...
