Straw Hats and Serge Bloomers Eileen Elias The great War-to-end-War had been over for two years; now it was the Twenties, a new decade with the promise of peace on earth and a world fit for heroes to live in. Eileen Elias was entering her teens just as Britain was entering the Twenties, her loyalties divided between the straw hats and serge bloomers of school uniform and the brave new world of short skirts, silk stockings, bobbed hair, 2 LO, the 'Pictures' (silent, of course) and the Charleston.
Here we follow the uncertain progress of her growing-up; her changing relationships with the family she had taken for granted in childhood days, and her gradual realisation that even Father might not always know best. Indeed she was to discover that he was as puzzled as anyone by a decade which saw the death of Lenin, the growing threat of unemployment, the last days of the British Empire (in spite of the much-vaunted Wembley Exhibition), and a General Strike which brought the country nearer to revolution than it had been in three hundred years.
In this sequel to the enchanting On Sundays We Wore White we pass from the closeness of the family to those first encounters with the outside world which matter so much to a child growing into her teens; hopes and fears, dreams and ambitions, moments of embarrassment and moments of sheer joy. There were still a few years to go before the little family circle was to break up for ever; but with the end of the decade comes the end of schooldays, and the end of the world of home.
